Royal Derby Hospital
A truly extensive project, this saw Firecatcher create a seaside aesthetic and identity, producing over 60 hand painted enhancements directly to the walls of the newly built Children’s Emergency Department in Derby Hospital, as well as work with the architects to specify floor and wall finishes, colour schemes and wayfinding systems.
Working with the seaside theme chosen through consultation groups, we created a narrative which we wove through the entire department. A fun group of Pirate seagull characters were created and illustrated in different scenarios around the Department. Waiting areas were given wall puzzles, light boxes and entertaining characters to keep little ones amused, whilst the attention to detail within enhancements in treatment rooms ensured staff were kept entertained too!
Following on from this initial enhancement scheme, Firecatcher were asked to illustrate a series of vinyl wrapped MDF boards to create depth and continue the narrative along the corridor of the Children’s Emergency Observation Unit. This also provided a flexible and practical enhancement solution for an area that was redecorated more frequently as the boards could be moved.
Along one side of the corridor a beautiful palette of calming seaside colours were used to create a peaceful and reflective range of designs detailing the day in the life of a seagull. We also worked with staff to create a competition for patients, the winners work was showcased on the opposite wall, creating a permanent exhibition of the children’s work.
